Tombstone Tumble

Iowa State Ride Design Competition 2022

November 2021 – April 2022

For the Iowa State Ride Design Competition in 2022 I worked alongside a team of engineering, design, and business majors to construct and operate a fully functional model flat ride called “Tombstone Tumble”. This western mine themed ride follows the story of J&J mines, once co-owned by Jasper and Jenkins until Jenkins decided 50/50 was not working for him. Shortly after Jasper conveniently passes away, leaving the fate of the mine up to chance. It is now up to the late Jasper’s cousin Lorraine to greedily fight for her part of the wealth. Deciding to duke it out in the mine, Jenkins and Lorraine stake a shoot out, but little did they know the ghost of Jasper still remains…

As the service lead and safety co-lead, I organized service events geared towards STEM education in the South Bend area as well as conducted risk analysis calculations, ensuring the ride would follow all ASTM standards when operated at a full scale. I also assisted in the brainstorming, design, fabrication, and operations of the project, allowing myself to see the full engineering design process. Placing 2nd nationally, Tombstone Tumble was operated for 8 consecutive hours and its performance was graded based in comparison to full scale flat rides at a standard theme park.

Let It Tumble!
