Radio Flyer Design Challenge

Our team was tasked with designing a collapsible handle for a Radio Flyer #3950 EZ Fold Wagon for a sponsored project. This handle would need to be able to intuitively attach to the already existing wagon design. Creating a model of the handle design in SolidWorks, our team then fabricated our most complex element of our design for a professional presentation of our engineering design processes and final demo with a penal of professors and a Radio Flyer representative.

The full CAD exploded view can be seen below along with the three subassemblies for the key features of our design.

The Handle.

This U-shaped design was deemed best for this design for its simplicity and function. Comprised of two connectors and one straight middle rod, the handle allows for an easy push similar to that of a stroller.

The Clamp.

To fasten our new handle to the wagon, a central bar along with two clamps and hand screws were designed to secure the device to the vehicle. The simple hand screws allow for less tools and ease of attachment.

The Joint.

The final subassembly, and most noteworthy is our joint feature. This torque resistant device allows for custom angles with the unique 3D printed joint part. This fabricated system used in our demo can be seen below.
